Desi weddings are my Roman Empire (IYKYK). In general, any form of weddings impose an inexplicable financial burden on couples, often falling upon the parents. While the exorbitant prices of wedding vendors, venues, and dresses in the US, coupled with the pressure to create a fairytale day, are well-known, desi weddings take this to another level.
Desi weddings span multiple days, requiring custom outfits for each event for the bride and all families, and obligating the couple to invite their entire social circle and respective families. Much of this is accepted without question, assumed to be the norm. While wealthy desi families can afford such lavish affairs, for the average family, it's a significant financial strain, often requiring a lifetime of savings.
A less discussed aspect is the immense pressure on the parents of the bride/groom to ensure the wedding meets societal norms, focusing more on maintaining social stature than celebrating the couple. While it's encouraging to see many couples adopting a more rational approach towards marriage, financial independence often remains overlooked. Couples who are otherwise financially prudent often succumb to overpriced decisions during wedding planning, solely to appease their families.
Breaking these norms is challenging but essential. Open and honest conversations, both as a couple and with families, regarding financial responsibilities and aligning the budget with the ability to build a life together, are crucial. Desi brides often harbor numerous desires for their wedding, influenced by societal expectations and personal preferences. Balancing non-negotiables with financial realities is key. It's unfair to parents to spend their savings on a three-day party where at the end of the day guests might still complain about the food LOL.
While everyone deserves their dream wedding, it shouldn't come at the expense of financial independence or burdening families. Wedding vendors' escalating costs suggest considering a single combined event, opting for intimate home-based pre-wedding celebrations, selecting well-made but not high-end designer dresses, and minimizing lavish expenditures on gifts. This not only eases pressure on families but also allows everyone to enjoy the festivities without feeling obligated to overspend.
